A COMPARISON OF FOUR SPECIES OFCORDYLINE

Abstract
In a histological examination of the leaf and stem of C. cannifolia, C. petiolaris, C. rubra and C. stricta certain characters were observed which enabled specific differentiation. These characters included the nature of the epidermis, which may be papillose, the crystalline form of calcium oxalate and the distribution of stomata. The four species were screened for the presence of steroidal saponin and the crude sapogenin mixture isolated subjected to thin layer chromatography. The predominating genin was found to be sarsasapogenin which was detected in all species except C. petiolaris.
