Abstract
Presents new data on the geology of the eastern Brianconnais region (defined here as the mountains lying between Oisans, France, to the west, and the Schistes lustres zone of Piedmont, Italy, to the east). At the latitude of Briancon, France, the zones of facies encountered from west to east are the Subbrianconnais, the Brianconnais, and the Gondran. It is suggested that the crystalline schists of the thrust slices of the eastern Brianconnais region are not outlying remnants of a Schistes lustres nappe, but are pre-Verrucano Paleozoic masses, lacking Carboniferous beds, which belong to the Gondran zone. The so-called fourth thrust slice merely represents an extreme westward extension of this series. Keywords
