Abstract
The paper presents results of digital computer studies of the transient behaviour of crossbonded cable systems. These results are based on a realistic mathematical cable model which takes account of such factors as skin effect in the conductors and metallic sheaths and of mutual coupling between individual cables due to current penetration into the soil. Unlike previous work on the subject, the results are not restricted to short systems. Results are given for prospective sheath overvoltages as a function of system length and these are compared with classical predictions based on first-incident-wave theory. Further studies investigate the action and performance of cable-covering protection units. Keywords
