THE INFLUENCE OF RICKETS AND OF THE HEALING OF RICKETS ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE TIBIAE OF RATS

Abstract
A technic for study of the mechanical properties of bones is described. Rats were rendered rachitic by a low-Ca diet. An anti-rachitic diet applied for 6 wks. was not sufficient to produce healing that would eliminate mechanical deficiencies in the tibiae when compared to litter-mate controls. After 65 days these deficiencies were generally eliminated. Partially healed rachitic bones show greater elasticity but less breaking stress than completely healed or normally developed bones.
