Leaky quantum wells: A basic theory and applications

Abstract
In this work, we describe the basic properties of the leaky-quantum-well system and outline the progress made to date in various device applications. The key feature of the leaky quantum well, namely the existence of a leaky (tunneling) window near the bottom of the quantum well, and the associated quasi-bound states are analyzed in a two-band k∙P model. The unique and important properties of these types of quantum wells and their structure dependences are presented. A few representative electronic and photonic devices based on the leaky quantum wells are discussed.
