Abstract
The polarization of Lyman α radiation is calculated in the Born and distortion approximation including rotational coupling between the hydrogen magnetic substates. The rare gases helium, neon and argon are represented by their Hartree-Fock potentials. Comparison with recent experiments shows that both rotational coupling and distortion have to be considered to obtain reasonable agreement between theory and experiment. Keywords
