Abstract
Police officers are entrusted with the delicate task of applying force with reasonable care. In situations where police misuse their power of force, complaints of misconduct frequently arise. There is a wealth of information on civil litigation but a lack of data concerning the conditions accompanying alleged incidents of police misconduct. This study examines plaintiffs settlements and judgments, and the conditions associated with lawsuits filed against a major Southern California law enforcement agency. Keywords
