THE SPECTER OF MALNUTRITION IN CHRONIC ILLNESS

Abstract
The high incidence of under-nutrition among patients with chronic diseases is emphasized in the present paper, in which 138 cases are analyzed. The clinical findings associated with malnutrition in these cases are reviewed in detail. The causes underlying the development of dietary inadequacy are sought. In the treatment of under-nutrition many types of therapy were tried. An adequate, varied diet with optimal amounts of all necessary factors is most efficacious. The vicious cycle associated with malnutrition, and perpetuated by anorexia, can be overcome in a few days by forced feeding.
