Varicella Vendetta: Plotkin's Plug

Abstract
In the January 1977 issue there were two articles by Asano et al. concerning a Japanese live vaccine against varicella. Preceding the articles was a commentary by Philip Brunell denouncing the studies described. Although my friend Dr. Brunell and I have already presented opposing views on this subject in a previous issue of Pediatrics, I think fairness requires that your readers hear the other side once again. Somewhere Montaigne wrote that the three stages of scientists' reactions to a new fact are first that it's not true, second that it's true but not important, and third that it's important but obvious.
