Ovarian Follicular Estrogens in Angus Heifers

Abstract
Estrone (E1), estradiol-17β(E2β), estradiol-17α (E2a) and estriol (E3) were measured (using gas liquid chromatography) in the largest follicle taken from each ovary of Angus heifers at estrus and on day 14 following estrus. More total estrogen (E1 + E2β) was found in the largest follicle in the ovary without a corpus luteum as compared to the ovary with the recently functional corpus luteum at estrus (9.2 µg vs. 4.3 µg; P < .05). This difference was reversed on day 14 (3.0 µg vs. 6.1 µg; P < .05). There was no significant correlation between the content of estrone and estradiol-17β in the largest follicle nor was there an effect of follicular size, within day, upon estrogen content. Estradiol-17α was detected in seven of the 18 follicles studied but no association was found between the presence of estradiol-17α and the follicular content of estradiol-17β or estrone. The mean weight of the follicles from heifers in estrus was significantly greater than of follicles from heifers on day 14 (mean = 783 mg vs. 411 mg; P < .01). Copyright © 1973.
