Dr. Carl M. Pearson: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is not merely a disease of joints and periarticular tissues; it is rather—as we shall try to demonstrate today—a systemic disease. Its articular manifestations are usually most prominent and produce the greatest amount of discomfort and disability, but they are not lethal. On the other hand, the many and varied systemic manifestations of rheumatoid disease may involve nearly any or every bodily organ or system, and some can be fatal.
