The Role of Radiation Therapy in the Management of Carcinoma of the Sigmoid, Rectosigmoid, and Rectum

Abstract
One hundred and eleven patients with inoperable carcinoma of the low sigmoid, rectosigmoid and rectum, were treated by radiation therapy at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The series included 86 recurrences; 16 lesions inoperable because of local or distant spread of the disease, and 9 cases of residual cancer following surgical resection. Significant palliation was achieved in 84% of patients treated, and of 58 patients with residual, inoperable, or recurrent cancer confined to the pelvis, 6 or 10% remained well for five years or more. With the availability of supervoltage radiation therapy, a great deal can be offered to patients with inoperable, or recurrent cancer of the distal colon and rectum.
