The penetration of cefuroxime into the cerebrospinal fluid through inflamed and non-inflamed meninges

Abstract
The concentrations of cefuroxime sodium in cerebrospinal fluid and serum after a single 1.5 g i.v. bolus injection were measured in patients with varying degrees of meningeal inflammation. Cefuroxime was found to pass into the CSF of those patients with inflamed meninges, the amount being dependent on the degree of inflammation. No relationship was detected between CSF levels and the intervals between the administration of cefuroxime and the lumbar puncture which ranged from 1 to 5½ h. In addition, no correlation was found between serum and CSF concentrations. High CSF and serum levels were found in one anuric patient.
