Vinegar Fly Investigations in Northern California

Abstract
Low light intensities and temperatures above 13[degree]C are necessary for flight of Drosophila melanogaster adults. Minor localized movement takes place when conditions are not favorable for heavy flights. Attractiveness of natural baits to adult flies is ever changing. Adult flies oviposit readily in freshly slit tomatoes, and highest egg deposition occurs when conditions are most favorable for adult activity and flight. Egg laying occurs at all hours of the day when the temperature is higher than 13[degree]C. Of the treatments tested to control the flies in tomato fields, dieldrin applied by airplane at the rate of 1 pound of actual material per acre in 10 gallons of water showed the most promise.
