Relationship between Endoesophageal and Intrathoracic Pressures in Children

Abstract
The specific elasticity of the esophageal walls (Δ PEs/ Δ VEs) was studied at different inspiratory levels in 10 asthmatic, symptom-free children, 7–16 years of age. Δ PEs/ Δ VEs was negatively correlated with the standing height. Moreover, Δ PEs/ Δ VEs increased with the lung volume (i.e. static intrathoracic pressure) at 50–60% of total lung capacity (TCL) in older and at 40–50% TLC in younger subjects. Consequently, the difference between absolute pleural and intraesophageal pressures was larger in younger than in older children, when a similar small volume of air was introduced into the intraesophageal ballooncatheter system
