Nephropathy Associated With Methoxyflurane Anesthesia

Abstract
A toxic nephropathy associated with methoxyflurane anesthesia was observed in 17 patients. Marked diuresis was the predominant clinical characteristic. A test to distinguish between a primary renal disorder and an insufficiency of endogenous antidiuretic hormone was performed on six of the patients. Clear-cut impairment of renal function was demonstrated; gradual improvement, over a period of months, was noted on subsequent studies. Evidence of nephropathy associated with methoxyflurane anesthesia in 28 additional patients has been reported in the literature.
