Host-Feeding Patterns of Culex Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) on Farms in Gharbiya Governorate, Egypt12

Abstract
Three farms in Gharbiya Governorate, Egypt, were studied from September 1982 to August 1983 to determine the host-feeding patterns of Culex pipiens and Culex antennatus. Mosquitoes were collected by dry-ice-baited light traps and aspiration, and a host census was taken. Antisera were prepared in rabbits and chickens to human, cow/buffalo, sheep/goat, horse/donkey, dog, cat, rat, general mammal, and general bird. A total of 2327 mosquito blood meals were analyzed by the modified precipitin technique; of these, 68 (3.0%) were multiple-host feedings and 12 (0.5%) were nonreactive. Both Cx. pipiens and Cx. antennatus fed almost exclusively on mammals; only 5 Cx. pipiens (2.1%) fed on birds. Culex pipiens remained closely associated with the host after feeding, but Cx. antennatus left the immediate vicinity of the host to rest elsewhere.
