THE EFFECT OF CYTOCHROME C UPON THE METABOLISM OF RAT TISSUES

Abstract
Decreased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content of anoxic rat kidney reported by Proger et al. was confirmed. Prevention of the lowered ATP content of anoxic kidney by the antecedent intraven. admn. of cytochrome C, reported by these authors, was not observed in the present expts. No alteration in the O2 consumption of rat diaphragm and liver and kidney slices was observed following the addition of cytochrome C to the medium in vitro either with glucose or succinate as substrates. Using the turnover number of cytochrome C and known values of tissue cytochrome C, the maximum O2 uptake of various tissues was calculated. Comparison of these calculated values with the range of O2 requirements lent no support to the concept that the cytochrome C content of tissues was a limiting factor in cellular oxidations within physiologic ranges.
