Glucose inhibition of fatty acid oxidation by rat diaphragm

Abstract
The effects of glucose on the uptake and oxidation of albumin-bound palmitate-1-C14 by the rat diaphragm in vitro were studied. The conversion of labeled palmitate to C14O2 was greater in diaphragms from fasted than fed rats. High concentrations of glucose or lower concentrations of glucose with insulin decreased the production of C14O2 by diaphragms from 24-hour-fasted rats. Glucose with insulin did not affect the uptake of palmitate. The glucose effect on palmitate oxidation in vitro seems dependent upon adequate glucose uptake and utilization.
