Celiac Artery Thrombosis Resulting in Infarction of the Liver and the Small Intestine

Abstract
Two patients are described in which fatal infarction of the intestine and liver occurred due to thrombotic occlusion of an arteriosclerotic celiac artery from which both hepatic and superior mesenteric arteries arose. In neither case was the diagnosis established before death. Although this anatomic variant appears to occur in about 2% of the population, no previous report of such concomitant infarction was found. The variability of the normal blood supply to the small intestine and liver and the factors leading to the infarction are discussed. Early recognition of this entity might permit successful surgical intervention in some patients.
