Abstract
Three inbred marker lines of Petunia hybrida Vilm. carrying independently inherited monogenic characters (apt, apetalous flower; D flower doubleness; G grandiflora plant and flower) were hybridized with the petalous, single-flowered, multifloral Petunia species, P. axillaris (Lam.) B.S.P., P. inflata Fries, P. violacea Lindl., and P. parodii W.C.S. to obtain information about the genetic affinities between these species and the cultivated Petunia. Each of the three genetic characters was determined to be monogenetically inherited in immediate progenies of crosses with the four Petunia species, although the testcross and F2 ratios were aberrant for segregation of flower doubleness following crosses with P. inflata and P. violacea. This could be due to interspecific chromosomal divergencies, or segregation of modifiers of D. The results are generally consistent with the view that a large degree of genetic homology exists in the genus Petunia. Keywords
