Abstract
An introduction to electro-optical effects in dielectric materials is given. Inorganic and organic crystals for optoelectronic devices such as modulators, switches and signal processors are reviewed. The fundamental physical effects relevant for these applications and the figures of merit for the materials are described and some devices realized with dielectric materials are discussed. Keywords
