Induced Torque in Potassium

Abstract
Torque induced in potassium samples prepared in a variety of ways has been studied as a function of the magnitude and direction of magnetic field. The twofold anisotropy in the induced torque reported previously by Schaefer and Marcus was observed in some samples and was absent in others. The effect depended on the method of sample preparation and the presence of oil on the sample during the experiment. The conditions existing in previous experiments showing both isotropic and anisotropic torque are shown in the present experiment. The magnetic field dependence is linear at torque minima and faster than linear at torque maxima. Possible causes of the anisotropy and magnetic field dependence are considered.
