Abstract
The formalism of second quantization is used to calculate matrix elements of the Coulomb operator between configurations having several open shells. Antisymmetric many-particle states are formed by products of creation operators acting on the vacuum state, and the Coulomb interaction is written as a product of creation and destruction operators. Manipulation of all of these operators leads to results equivalent to those obtained by Fano. Keywords
