Perloline Inhibition of in vitro Ruminal Cellulose Digestion1

Abstract
Perloline, an alkaloid isolated from Festuca arundinacea, inhibited in vitro cellulose digestion by microorganisms of rumen fluid. Digestion of purified cellulose was more sensitive to perloline than was the digestion of cellulose in leaf tissue of F. arundinacea. Poor performance of cattle grazing F. arundinacea may be related to the effect of perloline on the digestion of cellulose by rumen microorganisms.
