Abstract
Eye fixations on a stimulus window by infant chimpanzees declined in the minute following stimulus presentation. The decline was sharper when the stimulus was presented alone than when it was presented with another equivalent stimulus. This difference was related to a higher number of fixations occurring initially in the 2-stimulus case. A single empty box was viewed less than 1 with objects in it, and this difference was a result of fewer and perhaps longer fixations on the objects. Presentation and removal of an alternative stimulus did not increase fixations on one that had already been presented. Keywords
