Abstract
This paper examines current trends in workplace dynamics in Australia and considers what the future will hold for social workers in the year 2000. Agencies vary greatly in their expectations of workers, with some expecting a limited task focus and others wanting workers to become part of management teams. To hold their place in the workforce, workers will have to understand the widening expectations of employers and show they can contribute to agency goals. Tensions will continue between workers committed to social justice and agencies cutting services because of limited budgets. Social workers need to re-evaluate their positions in organizations and become more assertive and proactive. Education and debate is needed to face these conflicts.
