Abstract
A group of 63 non-pregnant women with acute urinary infections (mostly symptomatic) were referred from their generla practitioners to a special clinic and treated with oral cephradine (32 patients) or ampicillin (31 patients). Only 6 patients (3 in each group) showed treatment failure after 6 weeks follow-up. Both antibiotics were effetive in the presence of renal tissu infection as judged by raised serum agglutinin titres. Only 28% of the patients given cephradine complained of any unwanted drug effects, which were noted in 45% of the women given ampicillin. Failure of treatment was not due to the development of bacterial resistance. Keywords
