Abstract
A specific anti-serum was prepared in rabbits to purified human myoglobin. It was used to measure the myoglobin content of skeletal muscles of adults, children, and premature infants. Myoglobin is present in extremely low concentration in fetal muscle and its concentration increases with maturation. Data obtained immunologically and physicochemically correlated well in the case of adult and children''s samples, but not in the case of fetal samples, indicating the presence in fetal muscle of low-density heme compounds distinct from adult myoglobin.
