Conduction of Ionic Solutes and Assimilates in the Leptom ofPolytrichum juniperinumWilld.

Abstract
The leptom was found to conduct assimilates, exogenous applied sucrose, and ionic solutes such as sulphate and lead. Ions, some of which are toxic, can move in the free space from the outer surface across the cortex to the leptom. The ions are accumulated in the leptom cells, leaving the hadrom free. The possible function of the leptom as endodermis is discussed.
