Abstract
Evidence is advanced in support of a hypothesis that a chromatophorotrophic substance arising in the circumesoph-ageal-connective region of the central nervous system of Crago is not only a darkening agent for the telson and uropods, but also a darkening agent for the body as a whole. The latter influence appears typically obscured, in assaying extracts of the region, by the invariable simultaneous presence of a greater or lesser amt. of an antagonistic principle. It is proposed that this Crago -body-darkening principle be abbreviated to CDH. The origin of CDH in Crago was in the minute tritocerebral commissure with the mid-region of the commissure showing clearly the highest concn. of the principle. Of all parts of the nervous system of Crago, only the commissure and the immediately adjacent face of the circum-esophageal connectives showed any significant CDH activity.
