The Mode of Action of 7-Methyl Folic Acid

Abstract
In a study of the mechanism of action of the antibody, ablastin, upon T. lewisi, the oxidative metabolism of trypanosomes from rats at different ages of infection was compared. The infections in which no number crisis was produced by the appearance of trypanolysins were 2-10 days of age. Trypanosome reproduction stopped on the fourth or fifth day of infection. Compared with young reproducing organisms, the adult non-reproducing forms respiring on glucose had a higher rate of O2 intake, a higher R.Q., and a greater sensitivity to malonate inhibition of O2 uptake. The increased O2 consumption per 109 organisms may result from the fact that the mean size of young trypanosomes is less than that of old ones, but the changes in R.Q. and malonate sensitivity are independent of variations in the mean size of trypanosomes. Added fumarate did not relieve the malonate inhibition.
