Regulation of Water and Electrolytes

Abstract
Servomechanisms are discussed, including those that regulate water relative to solute (through the neurohypophyseal antidiuretic hormone system), and those that regulate solute (especially sodium) content and hence volume (through neural and humoral agents, including aldosterone). Regulation of intake as well as of output is stressed and the central integration of these two dual regulatory systems is discussed. In addition to afferent signals and efferent effector mechanisms, receptor transfer functions are considered.
