Preparation of Carbon Electrodes for Electronic Double-Layer Capacitors by Carbonization of Metal-Ion-Exchanged Resins

Abstract
Porous carbon materials for the carbon electrodes of an electronic double‐layer capacitor (EDLC) were prepared by carbonization of commercial ion‐exchanged resins. Carbonized materials from a chelate resin with ion showed much higher specific capacitance than commercial carbon electrodes. The capacitance remained at a high level even after more than 60 charge and discharge cycles were repeated. An aqueous solution appeared to be a suitable electrolyte for EDLC electrodes prepared from the ion‐exchanged resin. ©2000 The Electrochemical Society
