Abstract
The distal ends of the inner segments of avian cones contain brightly colored oil droplets which consist of carotenoid pigments dissolved in lipid material. The elimition of these pigments, thus the production of ‘colorless’ droplets, has been achieved in newly-hatched Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnixjaponica) by exclusion of carotenoids from the diet of their parents. ‘Colorless’ newly-hatched quail maintained on a carotenoid-free diet (vitamin A added) exhibit normal growth and reproductive capacities.
