Abstract
In an attempt to develop new social roles for the aged, a 3-year demonstration project testing the effectiveness of group methods in recruiting, training, and retaining older persons as volunteers in community service has actively involved 640 persons to date. Success in recruitment and retention, especially of the non-traditional volunteer, appears strongly related to the structuring of programs which respond to individual volunteer differences, particularly those of social class. Some guidelines for volunteer program development are suggested and more defined ones will follow after analysis is completed of specific program components and techniques. Replication and adaptation of the SERVE approach can be used to establish such programs in other communities. Keywords
