Abstract
Kinetin (6-furfurylamino-purine) makes Grand Rapids lettuce seeds more sensitive to the promotion of germination by red light. The compound decreases markedly the amount of light energy needed to bring about complete germination. In the presence of kinetin, far-red light promotes to some extent the germination of seeds imbibed in darkness and only partially reverses the promotive effect of previous exposures to red light. Apparently, kinetin has these effects without being involved in the photoreaction, or in the reactions occurring before and after light exposure, and without being a product of this series of reactions.
