Brain pathology in schizophrenia: developmental or degenerative?

Abstract
Two pathological processes may account for the structural brain pathology seen in schizophrenia: degeneration and aberrant development. Evidence from studies in vivo using structural imaging, in particular magnetic resonance imaging, and functional imaging increasingly complement the findings of post-mortem research encompassing cytoarchitectural, neurochemical and gene expression studies to support a developmental aetiology.
