Effects of Insect Injury Simulation on Photosynthesis of Apple Leaves1

Abstract
Greenhouse tests were conducted to determine effects of simulated insect injury on apple leaf net photosynthesis (Pn). Losses in leaf area of up to 7.5% had no significant effect on Pn. Significant reductions in Pn were observed as early as 1 day after treatment where losses in leaf area exceeded 10%. Increased circumference of the leaf area lost by simulated insect feeding increased the reduction of Pn. Injury to main side leaf veins significantly amplified the reduction in Pn in comparison to Pn values of leaves with interveinal injury.
