Abstract
A theoretical model is presented for solutions of non-metals in liquid alkali-metals. This is based upon the assumption that these dissolve in the form of negative ions. By use of a Born–Haber cycle the different quantities determining the enthalpy of dissolution are separated. One of these is the electrostatic energy of the dissolved ion imbedded in the electron gas of the metal. This is calculated by use of a slightly modified Thomas–Fermi screening potential. In cases where experimental data are available reasonable agreement with the calculated values is found. Keywords
