Abstract
Irradiation of O-1-alkyl-2-phenylethyl thiobenzoates gives styrenes and 2-alkyl-2-hydroxy-1-phenylethyl phenyl thioketones (III). The reaction proceeds via an oxetan (VIII), which is stable at –78° but rapidly rearranges to the thione (III) at ca. –20°.Keywords
