Stimulus generalization of a positive conditioned reinforcer: II. Effects of discrimination training.

Abstract
Twenty-four pigeons were trained in a Skinner box to peck at an unlighted key for a periodic 2-sec. exposures of 550 m[mu], the conditioned reinforcer, which was immediately followed by food reward. For the experimental group (n = 12) 2-sec. exposures of 570 m[mu] (never followed by food) were concurrently scheduled. Both groups were tested for generalization in extinction with a procedure which allowed each S equal opportunity to respond to the blank key to produce the stimuli of 510, 530, 550, 570, and 590 m[mu]. The control group showed a stable decremental gradient on either side of 550 m[mu]. The experimental gradient showed the displacement and the elevation of the gradient typically found following successive discrimination training along the relevant dimension.
