INCREASED INCIDENCE OF SEVERE HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA AMONG NEWBORN CHINESE INFANTS WITH G-6-P D DEFICIENCY

Abstract
Twenty-six G-6-P D deficient cases (3%) were found among 878 Chinese newborn males. Serum bilirubin levels were significantly higher in th G-6- P D defint infants than in premature and full-term Chinese neonates studied previously. Ten of the 26 subjects had peak bilirubin levels above 20 mg/100 ml. These results suggest that a substantial proportion of the male Chinese neonates who develop severe neonatal jaundice come from the relatively small proportion with G-6-P D deficiency.
