Microscopic Derivation of the Helmholtz Force Density

Abstract
The Helmholtz force density for a dielectric fluid placed in an electric field is derived microscopically. It is found that in addition to an electrical force, there is also an additional mechanical force proportional to and only the sum of the two equals . Time-dependent cases are briefly discussed.
