Abstract
The applicability of Dean's stream function method to estimate the orbital wave velocities has been tested for the linear and nonlinear (infinitesimal and finite amplitude waves on a uniform depth channel and the nonlinear waves on breaking zone of a sloping bottom. It is shown the agreements between the measured and computed wave velocities are fair but become comparatively well if a suitable uniform horizontal velocity component is assumed. The method is shown to be very effective to estimate the radiation stress distribution and thus the wave set-down and set-up near the shoreline. Keywords
