Forgotten Children: Maltreated Children of Mentally Retarded Parents

Abstract
The usual problems of parenting are intensified by limited parental intellectual capabilities; a family case study of 2 retarded parents who abused their 2 small sons was presented. Criteria under which abuse is mostly likely to occur was exemplified by the family data: parental potential for abuse, social disruptions in living accommodations and a favored child. Parental developmental disability, a 4th criterion in this case, masked the identification of abuse. Supportive interventions included: parental support, keeping the family intact, reducing unintentional neglect and providing personal and social stimulation for the children.
