Reactionπ−p→π−π0pat 8 GeV /c

A sample of 1147 events of the type ${\pi }^{-}p\to {\pi }^{-}{\pi }^{0}p$ has been obtained from the measurement of 30 400 two-prong events in an exposure of the Brookhaven 80-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to an 8-GeV/c ${\pi }^{-}$ beam. In the ${\pi }^{-}{\pi }^0$ system, the ${\rho }^{-}$ and $g^{-}$ mesons are observed; neither is strongly associated with isobar production. The presence of appreciable ${\omega }^0$ exchange in ${\pi }^{-}p\to {\rho }^{-}p$ is suggested by the shape of the ${\Delta }^2$ distribution in this reaction and by the ratio of the production cross sections $\frac{\sigma ({\pi }^{-}p\to {\rho }^{0}n)}{\sigma ({\pi }^{-}p\to {\rho }^{-}p)}$ at 8 GeV/c.
