The Structure of Antigen Films and Long-Range Forces

Abstract
Rothen (1946) reported expts. involving interaction between films of spread antigens and homologous antisera. Inert films did not completely prevent the specific immobilization of antibody. This was explained in terms of specific long-range forces, extending over 200 A. An assumption is the claim that the antigenic films involved completely unfolded molecules. This claim is unjustified; the antigenic film is not of constant thickness but may contain projections as high as 200 A. This can account for Rothen''s results without assuming long-range forces. Electron microscope studies of antigenic films indicate an irregular structure.
