Abstract
An in vitro perfused dogfish (Mustelus canis) heart preparation was developed which mimics in situ levels of heart rate, cardiac output, and pressure development. Insulin was found to be necessary for the maintenance of the concentration of highenergy phosphates in hearts perfused with buffer containing glucose and also appeared to improve the mechanical performance of the perfused heart. Hypoxia leading to contractile deterioration and decreased levels of high-energy phosphates resulted in only a modest depletion of glycogen in the isolated heart. High levels of lactate were found to be detrimental to cardiac function. This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
