CHANGES IN PLASMA PROLACTIN CONCENTRATION DURING THE OVULATORY CYCLE OF THE CHICKEN

Abstract
Changes in the plasma prolactin level during the ovulatory cycle of the chicken are described. Depressed prolactin levels were found immediately before the preovulatory LH [luteinizing hormone] surge; this might facilitate secretion of ovarian steroids which then exert a positive feedback effect on LH release. The increase in prolactin concentration after the LH peak might be involved in the inhibition of steroidogenesis, suggesting an inhibitory role of prolactin.
